  Challenge

Jaman is the way people discover, enjoy and share world cinema. Jaman's global online community is pioneering social cinema. It is a new destination for moviegoers to watch and discuss the world's best films. Having curated and assembled one of the world's largest online libraries of feature films and documentaries, Jaman provides filmmakers and studios a secure way to distribute and market films worldwide. Cascade, Jaman's global peer to peer network, delivers movies with better-than-DVD quality to Macs, PCs or home entertainment systems via a sleek, device-independent player.

But how do you make the experience of discovering films more fun and simple to use? Especially with a brand new cutting edge technology....

Solution

As the user experience design lead for the project, my responsibilities included: interaction design, user research, branding, and product strategy.

I worked closely with the key stakeholders to understand the business/user goals, market environment, and the technology that will be used to build the product.

We used Agile development process to develop the website and rich desktop client (Mac/PC). Even with the short release schedules,
I conducted series of focus groups, visited users at their homes for a rapid contextual inquiry, analyzed competitive products/services, and reviewed customer support data to understand the user’s “want and needs” from the product. This continuous investment in user research became invaluable for the design and business strategy.

Using the data gathered from the user research , I worked with my team to create the personas (target user profiles), user scenarios, and software prototypes. Most of the prototypes were created in Visio/Photoshop for its high fidelity quality and ability to make quick iterative changes.

Some of the key discoveries from the user research revealed that:
* Social networking features optimized for the film fans was a must
* Best way to discover films is through people
* Content (films + people ) is still the king - not the technology behind it

Based on the key discoveries, Jaman was redesigned to focus more on community user experinece to help people find and purchase films.
